New ‘Harry Potter’ show could finally include this forgotten storyline

The new ‘Harry Potter’ TV series is still a few years away from airing, but there is already growing excitement amongst the fanbase regarding how it will differ from the movies.

Update:
Harry Potter

‘Harry Potter’ fans were recently treated to news that the a TV series based on all seven books written by J.K. Rowling is set to come Warner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming platform, Max.

“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content about the project.

He also assured fans the show would be “a faithful adaptation”, with early reports suggesting each season would focus on one book in the series, while suggesting it could run for “10 consecutive years.”

Could the ‘Harry Potter’ show include this storyline that was left out of the movies?

The movie franchise was a critical and financial success, and didn’t deviate much form the plot of the books.

Given the show will have more air time compared to the movies, fans may be treated to certain aspects of the book that weren’t included in the big screen adaptations.

One aspect the show may focus more on is the house-elves and how they played a part in the fight against Voldemort.

Although they played a big part in the books, they were’t given their due in the films.

Largely remembered thanks to Dobby, house-elves are creatures who often served old wizarding families or institutions, and Pureblood households. They must do what their masters command unless they were freed, which could only happen when their master presented them with clothes.

Fiercely loyal despite their sometimes poor treatment, house-elves are low status beings, though they have their own kind of magic that doesn’t have the same constraints as wizards.

House-elves and S.P.E.W.

One part of the house-elf story that didn’t make it to the movies is S.P.E.W. (Society for the Protection of Elvish Welfare).

In the books, Hermione is a passionate activist who fights for improved conditions for the house-elves.

Although she does her part to help them become freed, like hide clothes in the Gryffindor common room, some house-elves are hesitant to claim them as they are unsure whether they want their freedom.

In fact, free house-elves are looked down on. One character not included in the movies is Winky, formerly a house-elf to the Crouch’s, and he and Dobby explore the treatment of house-elves and societal norms in the books.

House-elves and Voldemort

As for the house-elves and their part in fighting Voldemort, the book showed that many joined in the battle despite being given the chance to escape.

The Hogwarts house-elves join the battle to protect the castle, and are led by Kreacher, who was previously abused by Voldemort as well.

Formerly of the Black family, Kreacher showed loyalty to the family and animosity towards Harry and his friends. However thanks to their kindness, Kreacher is won over and eventually joins them in battle in his own redemption arc.

With the new show likely being given more time to explore these storylines, and others, that weren’t included in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies, no doubt fans will want to tune in to see what the new project has to offer.

While still unofficial, the series is expected to air in 2025/26 as part Warner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming platform Max.
