The Manhattan Project, nuclear weapons, World War II, morality, and physics at its core. This is a potent mix ready to make history.

The most nominated film of this year's awards with 13 nods, it's the first since 2018 to have so many options to win. That year's 'The Shape of Water' also took home the big prize. 'Oppenheimer' is the frontrunner, marrying critical acclaim with audience adoration to become one of the top-grossing films of 2023. It quickly rose to the top of the Oscar contenders list, thanks in part to its unusual summer release. 'Oppenheimer' has swept through the awards season, marking Christopher Nolan's twelfth and perhaps most complete work to date.

Nolan is in the running for three awards: Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Despite eight nominations, he has yet to win. 'Inception' and 'Dunkirk' are among his films that have been nominated for the top prize. This year appears set for his moment of recognition.

Behind this project is Universal Studios, with nine wins under its belt for cinematic masterpieces such as 'The Sting', 'Schindler's List', 'Gladiator', and 'A Beautiful Mind'. Its last win was in 2018 with 'Green Book'.

A highlight of 'Oppenheimer' is Cillian Murphy. In his Oscar debut, he must overcome Paul Giamatti to clinch the statuette. A Nolan regular, Murphy gained international fame with 'Peaky Blinders'.

In the acting categories, it has secured three out of four nominations. Robert Downey Jr. is the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor. The seasoned actor is nominated for the third time following 'Chaplin' and 'Tropic Thunder'. His moment of glory finally seems within reach.

The always spot-on Emily Blunt is nominated for the first time, despite standout roles in films like 'Sicario' and 'A Quiet Place'. Her chances in Best Supporting Actress may be slim, but her nomination is well-deserved.

'Oppenheimer's nominations have satisfied many who have long called for recognition. Notably, cinematographer Van Hoytema, a favorite, is backed by his work on 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy', 'Dunkirk', and 'Interstellar'.

Similarly, editor Jennifer Lame stands on the cusp of her first Oscar win. Her impressive filmography includes 'Tenet', 'Marriage Story', 'Hereditary', and 'Manchester by the Sea'.

In the Sound category, it's a strong contender with three of the top nominees. Richard King, doubling up with 'Maestro', and especially Kevin O'Connell, marking his 21st nomination, previously won for 'Hacksaw Ridge'.

Nolan shares the Best Picture nomination with his wife, producer Emma Thomas, who has collaborated on other Nolan films. Producer Charles Roven, another cornerstone of 'Oppenheimer', previously earned an Oscar nod for 'American Hustle'.
