Taylor Lautner says he was one of the many people that were left confused by the infamous 2009 MTV VMAs moment involving Taylor Swift and Kanye West.

Lautner and Swift dated for a few months back in 2009, and though the 30-year-old has rarely discussed the relationship, he did reveal his thoughts on the famous VMA incident.

The topic came up during the debut episode of Lautner’s podcast ‘The Squeeze’, which he hosts alongside wife Tay Dome Lautner. Taylor was asked what moment from his past he would return to if given the chance, with his answer causing his wife to say: “I’m deceased.”

“Probably the 2009 VMAs,” Taylor answered. “I presented the award to her. I took five steps back and was standing five feet behind her.

“And, yeah, in the middle of her giving her ‘thank you’ speech, Kanye jumps on the stage.”

“I can barely hear it. I can’t see them, I’m just assuming that this whole thing was a practiced and rehearsed skit because why else would Kanye West be jumping up on the stage, interrupting Taylor Swift?

“It just didn’t make sense.”

What happened between Kanye West and Taylor Swift?

The incident is one of the most infamous in award show history.

West, who now goes by ‘Ye’, famously got on stage and interrupted Swift as she accepted her Moonman trophy before grabbing the microphone from her.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish,” West said. “But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time,” he added referencing Queen Bey’s video for “Single Ladies”.

Lautner and Swift had just gone public with their relationship at the time, and while he initially laughed at the interaction, that all changed when he saw her face.

“He jumped off. She finished. The second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh. No. That wasn’t good,” he said.

The two dated for several months in 2009 before calling it quits in December.

“He liked her more than she liked him. He went everywhere he could to see her, but she didn’t travel much to see him,” a source told Us Weekly at the time. “They decided they were better as friends.”

The relationship clearly left a mark on Swift, as the song ‘Back to December’ on her 2010 album Speak Now is widely reported as being about her relationship with the ‘Twilight’ star.

According to Swift, it was the first time she ever apologized to someone on a song.

“Up until now, I haven’t really felt like I really needed to apologize to someone,” she admitted to Yahoo! Music at the time. “It’s just necessary.”
