Elle Macpherson first came to prominence as a model during the 1980s, when she appeared on the cover of major magazines including Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Marie Claire, although she has since moved into numerous industries, as the modern celebrity tends to do.
Nicknamed “The Body” by Time in 1989, the Australian made a record five appearances on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue before turning her attentions to acting and business.
Macpherson’s memorable “Friends’ role
“Friends” fans will remember her recurring role in five episodes of season 6 as Janine Lacroix, Joey’s roommate and eventual girlfriend.
Macpherson played lead roles in 1997 survival film thriller “The Edge” and 2001 romantic comedy “South Kensington,” as well as supporting characters in “Sirens” in 1994, “The Mirror Has Two Faces” in 1996 and “Batman and Robin” in 1997.
Her involvement in the world of television has also included hosting and producing the first season of NBC’s reality competition series “Fashion Star” (2012-13), as well as “Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model” for three years until 2013.
Successful lingerie and skin care ventures
Macpherson has become a hugely successful businesswoman, winning a number of awards including being named Glamour Magazine’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005. The 60-year-old has founded a number of businesses over the years, the most notable of which are lingerie line Elle Macpherson Intimates and skin care brand The Body.
In 2008, she was named Lingerie Designer of the Year in the Underfashion Club’s Femmy Awards, while Elle Macpherson Intimates was at one point the best-selling lingerie line in both Great Britain and Australia.
Elle Macpherson’s breast cancer scare
Macpherson recently revealed to Australia Women’s Weekly she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 but opted not to use traditional medicine as she fought the disease, instead choosing “holistic therapies” after having a lumpectomy.
That drew criticism from many, who branded her “lucky,” “irresponsible” and “reckless”. However, she claims to be in “utter wellness” following her ordeal and ready to take on her seventh decade.
