What are the lyrics to ‘Die With a Smile,’ the Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars collaboration?
After dropping a number of hints on social media, Gaga and Mars have released their first ever duet together, a soulful, country-inspired ballad.
The reason for Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ online winking at each other on social media is now clear for all to see, with the duo releasing their first ever collaboration, ‘Die With a Smile,’ on Thursday (August 15).
The soulful ballad’s vintage and very much country-inspired music video takes us back to Nashville in the 1970s, with the pop superstars sporting matching light blue suits and red shirts. A moustached Mars’ look is completed with a white cowboy hat, while Gaga, her hair stacked into a pile, grasps a cigarette, either between her lips or fingers, throughout the four-minute, 12-second clip.
Other that than, there’s nothing overly complex about the video. Mars is seen playing a hollow-body electric guitar and sings the first verse, while Gaga is on the piano and takes the second.
‘Die With a Smile’ lyrics
(Ooh, ooh)
I, I just woke up from a dream
Where you and I had to say goodbye
And I don’t know what it all means
But since I survived, I realized
Wherever you go, that’s where I’ll follow
Nobody’s promised tomorrow
So I’ma love you every night like it’s the last night
Like it’s the last night
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I’d wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
(Ooh, ooh)
Ooh, lost, lost in the words that we scream
I don’t even wanna do this anymore
’Cause you already know what you mean to me
And our love’s the only one worth fighting for
Wherever you go, that’s where I’ll follow
Nobody’s promised tomorrow
So I’ma love you every night like it’s the last night
Like it’s the last night
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I’d wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
Right next to you
Next to you
Right next to you
Oh-oh
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I’d wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
(Ooh, ooh)
I’d wanna be next to you
What have Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars said about each other?
In the press release for the song, the pair spoke about each other in glowing terms, as you would expect, with Gaga revealing Mars was the instigator for the collaboration.
“Bruno and I have a lot of mutual respect for each other and were talking about collaborating,” says Gaga. “I was finishing up my own album in Malibu and one night after a long day he asked me to come to his studio to hear something he was working on. It was around midnight when I got there and I was blown away when I heard what he had started making. We stayed up all night and finished writing and recording the song. Bruno’s talent is beyond explanation. His musicianship and vision is next level. There’s no one like him.”
Mars was equally complimentary, if a little briefer: “Getting to work with Gaga has been an honor. She’s an icon and she makes this song magical. I’m so excited for everyone to hear it.”
