The singer and host of her hit talk show has revealed how she managed to lose weight. Part of it is her new lifestyle and finally listening to her doctor.

Kelly Clarkson picked up stakes last year, moving her family and hit NBC talk show to New York City from Los Angeles. “I was very unhappy in L.A. and had been for several years,” she told People. “I needed a fresh start.”

The singer says that after “a really rough few years” this is her “first season to actually enjoy every minute of it.” The change of scenery has also given her a chance to focus on following her doctor’s orders to help her get in shape.

Clarkson credits the relocation to the Big Apple as being part of what has helped her drop weight and get into shape. “Walking in the city is quite the workout,” the single mother of River Rose, 9, and son Remington Alexander, 7 said. The three of them take advantage of her non-working days to explore the city.

In addition to the on-the-go activities she has been using cold plunges which are also a popular TikTok trend. As well, she is “really into infrared saunas right now.”

Natalie Burrows, a nutritional therapist, told Healthline that some small studies have correlated infrared saunas with successful fat loss. However, any weight reduction is more likely attributable to losing water than fat as “they are a great way to encourage sweating.” But while infrared saunas “are not a magic stand-alone weight loss tool” that perspiration can help the body detoxify which may benefit overall health.

When it comes to diet, which experts say is key to losing weight, Clarkson says that she eats “a healthy mix.” Despite being told she was prediabetic she waited a couple of years before doing something about it telling herself “But I’m not there yet,” she shared recently.

But now she’s been listening to her doctor. “90 percent of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway,” she said. “I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!”

The other ten percent she allows herself the occasional treat every now and then. “I still splurge,” she confided. “The other night I had a frozen yogurt with my daughter, and it was magical.”

The occasional indulgence can be a good thing according to Sarah Cooke, a registered associate nutritionist, to help people adhere to a healthy diet regimen. “The 80/20 rule is a good general principle to follow,” she told Heathline. That’s where 80 percent of the time you eat healthy and the remaining 20 percent you can give yourself a treat.
