Singer and actor Miley Cyrus has revealed that she headlined the Glastonbury music festival on the day she decided that her marriage to former husband Liam Hemsworth was over.

Cyrus separated from Hemsworth in mid-2019, less than a year after marrying the actor. The pair, who first began dating after meeting while shooting the 2010 movie The Last Song, finalised their divorce in early 2020.

Cyrus knew Hemsworth marriage “was no longer going to work”

In the latest instalment of her TikTok video series Used to Be Young, in which the 30-year-old looks back on her life and career, Cyrus said:

“Glastonbury was in June, which was when the decision had been made that me and Liam’s commitment to being married just really came from a place of love first, because we had been together for 10 years, but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could.

“The day of the show was the day that I had decided that it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship.”

At the time of their split, Cyrus and Hemsworth had recently endured the loss of their Malibu home, which was destroyed in a fire a month before their wedding in December 2018.

“The character came first”

Looking back on her Glastonbury set, Cyrus spoke of the effort required to bury the emotions caused by her marital problems and switch to an on-stage persona - something she says she’s now reluctant to do.

“That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first,” the two-time Grammy nominee explained. “And I guess that’s why it’s now so important to me for that to not be the case. That the human comes first.”

Chemistry with Hemsworth was “undeniable”

In a previous episode of Used to Be Young, Cyrus recalled the romantic sparks that flew between her and Hemsworth when they met on the set of The Last Song.

“I think one of the elements that made that movie feel so special was that it was watching two very young people fall in love with each other, which was happening in real time and in real life,” she said.

The chemistry was undeniable, and that was the beginning of a long, 10-year relationship.”
