What movies will be released in the US in May and where can I see them?

Here’s how things look in terms of what’s hitting the big screen over the next few weeks.

Update:
Here’s how things look in terms of what’s hitting the big screen over the next few weeks.

Whether you enjoy sneaking out to the movie theatre midweek or wading through the crowds on the weekend, the cinema experience has never been better.

This coming May, there are plenty of titles that are set to hit the big screen and pull in numbers ahead of summer, and here’s your guide to them all.

OK, so I’m not going to talk about all of the films, because we’d be here until June, and then there’d be no more May films left, but I’ll give you my top picks for each week. Just a quick note, every release day is a Friday, which is why I haven’t added it on.

May 3:

  • The Fall Guy
  • Tarot
  • Evil Does Not Exist
  • I Saw the TV Glow
  • Lost Soulz
  • Wildcat
  • Slow
  • New Life
  • Something in the Water

AS USA pick: If you are a sufferer of thalassophobia, then perhaps this one isn’t for you. Or it might be threapeutical. But probably not. IMBD writes that Something in the Water follows a group of five girlfriends who must fight for their lives in open water after a dream wedding transformed into a nightmare”.

Remember to breathe deeply when you’re watching this one. The film is written by Cat Clarke and stars Hiftu Quasem as well as Lauren Lyle and Natalie Mitson. And Jaws’ little brother.

May 10:

  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
  • Gasoline Rainbow
  • Force of Nature: The Dry 2
  • The Last Stop in Yuma County

AS USA pick: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the latest instalment of the saga that continues to test the boundaries of the English language with its increasingly long names, making for fantastic Trivial Pursuit questions in a few years time.

Set many years after the conclusion of 2017′s War for the Planet of the Apes, it’s the humans who are feral while the apes start to create various settlements using human technology. One tyrannical ape leader begins to enslave other groups to find human technology, while another ape embarks on a journey to find freedom. This film is the story of how a young woman (human) becomes a key figure in that quest.

May 17:

  • IF
  • Back to Black
  • The Strangers: Chapter 1
  • Babes
  • The Blue Angels
  • You Can't Run Forever

AS USA pick: This one is IF. The American live-action/animated fantasy comedy film was written, produced, and directed by John Krasinski, and features stars such as Ryan Reynolds, Fiona Shaw and Alan Kim.

The premise of the film is a small girl called Bea (Cailey Fleming) who realises she has the ability to see other people’s imaginary friends, called IFs, who have been abandoned.

The story takes us through her journey as she works with Cal (Ryan Reynolds) - a mixture between Willy Wonka and Doctor Who - to reunite the IFs with their former children. Steve Carell, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Blake Lively all voice various friends in this heart-warming project from Paramount Pictures.

May 24:

  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
  • The Garfield Movie
  • The Keeper
  • Kidnapped

AS USA pick: It’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and that’s that. I know that everyone loves Garfield, but despite the fact that Mad Max evidently doesn’t have a fat, ginger cat as the protagonist, Furiosa looks set to deliver.

The fifth instalment of the sublime series, it is both a spin-off and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the main character Imperator Furiosa, with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke also appearing.

May 31:

  • Ezra
  • Robot Dreams
  • Young Women and the Sea
  • 1992
  • In a Violent Nature
  • What You Wish For
  • Backspot
  • Summer Camp

AS USA pick: In a Violent Nature is certainly for those of you who like the feelings scared out of you so much you’ll have to chase them out of the theater. IMDB writes that the Canadian project is “an ambient horror slasher that methodically depicts the enigmatic resurrection, rampage, and retribution of an undead monster in a remote wilderness”. Maybe watch IF with the kids, and find another time for this one.

It stars Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic and Cameron Love. A year after its release, you will be able to watch In a Violent Nature on Shudder. If you dare.
