Where to watch online the original 1989 ‘Road House’ movie with Patrick Swayze

The 1989 original remains a cult classic and is worth revisiting even if you have just watched the remake.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s new movie Road House is now available to stream in the US on Prime Video. The action movie is an updated remake of the 80s original which starred the late dirty dancer Patrick Swayze and hit the screens almost exactly 35 years ago.

The new version is a nod to the 1989 original with a few differences. Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton is just as sharp with his tongue as he is with his fists, most but not all of the characters are similar and the story follows a similar plot although with a different ending.

Times have changed

The world is in a different place now to when Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch and Sam Elliott starred in the original Road House. Political correctness had yet to be invented, no internet, social media, mobile phones or streaming services - which is how you can watch both versions of the movie today.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House is available to stream on Prime Video, which is included with an Amazon Prime membership, priced at $14.99 per month or $139 annually. There is also a free trial available. A vast range of titles are available to rent or buy to watch on multiple devices (phones, PC, laptop, tablet, TV, streaming players, set-top boxes and game consoles…etc).

Meanwhile, the 1989 original Road House with Swayze as Cooler, James Dalton is also available on Prime Video and through Max in the United States as well as 39 countries in Latin America. Max offers three different plans from $9.99/month or $99.99/year (with ads) up to the ultimate streaming service with no ads from $19.99/month or $199.99/year.

Alternatively, you can stream the movie on Hulu (from  $7.99/month) or YouTube Premium, which offers a one-month trial - both require subscription. Road House is also available to rent or buy on Google Play, Apple TV and/or Fandango at Home.

Road House was released on VHS video at the time and has subsequently been issued on DVD (2002) and last year as a limited edition, 2-disc Blu Ray release, fully restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative plus a range of extras (Theatrical Trailer, Commentary track with director Rowdy Herrington, photo gallery) and a 40-page illustrated booklet.
