The 2023 Met Gala is almost here, with one of fashion’s biggest nights set to take place on its traditional date - the first Monday in May.

The Met Gala, or the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit, is a black-tie event held annually to raise funds for the Costume Institute, the museum’s collection of fashion objects.

Anna Wintour, Vogue editor in chief, organizes the event, which features plenty of A-listers as they head down the red carpet all while wearing elaborate and eye-catching attire.

The guest list is kept top secret until the evening before the event, with around 600 attendees expected.

Who are the hosts for the 2023 Met Gala?

While the Met Gala is organized and presided over by Wintour, there are several big names hosting this year’s event.

Joining Wintour as co-chairs are Dua Lipa, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer and Michaela Coel.

Livestream hosts include La La Anthony, Chloe Fineman and Derek Basberg. Livestream of the event will be available starting at 6:30 p.m. ET on Vogue’s website.

The red carpet for the 2023 Met Gala begins at 6:00 p.m. ET at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Met Gala theme and dress code

This year’s Met Gala theme is centered around Karl Lagerfeld and his work.

‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ will look at the work of the late fashion icon’s 65-year career, with a focus on his stylistic language and his timeless aesthetic themes.

In line with this year’s theme, the dress code for attendees is “in honor of Karl”. The event doesn’t usually choose an individual as a theme, opting for a concept on most occasions.

These themes usually center on ideas such as fashion and technology, or fashion and religion. The last time the Met Gala theme was centered on a person was back in 2017, when the event honored Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons.

Vogue noted that guests are expected to interpret the dress code in one of three ways.

“The first, most authentic approach would be to wear an archival look from one of the labels Lagerfeld led,” stated Vogue, meaning attendees might take inspiration from Lagerfeld’s work as Pierre Balmain’s assistant, or his time as head designer of Patou in the late 1950s.

He also worked for Chloe from 1963 to 1983, and then from 1992 to 1997, and also led Vintage Fendi.

Another approach is a “modern-day” look from Chanel or Fendi.

“From 1982 until his death in 2019, Lagerfeld’s care of Chanel vividly coloured his legacy,” the fashion magazine wrote.

“It goes without saying that those vying for modern-day Chanel and Fendi pieces will not disappoint.”

A third and final interpretation is to “dress à la Lagerfeld”, which might include finding a “Choupette all your own”.

Choupette Lagerfeld was the designer’s beloved pet white cat, though he was also known to wear black suits with white collars, dark sunglasses, gloves and a ponytail.
