Who are the winners of the 2025 honorary Oscars?

Five cinema legends were honored in November last year, at the Academy’s 15th annual Governors Awards.

A quintet of movie-industry legends received lifetime achievement Academy Awards late last year, in an honorary Oscars event that has been a standalone ceremony since 2009.

Who received honorary Oscars?

Quincy Jones, Juliet Taylor, Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson and Richard Curtis all received honorary accolades at November’s 15th annual Governors Awards.

Academy Honorary Awards

Jones, a seven-time Oscar-nominated composer and producer, received an Academy Honorary Award in recognition for his “illustrious musical career spanning seven decades”, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said.

Best known for his work on movies such as The Color Purple and In Cold Blood, Jones died aged 91 in early November, just two weeks before the Governors Awards.

“There’s an entire universe waiting in his seven decades of music,” Jones’ daughter, the actor Rashida Jones, said as she accepted the award on his behalf. “And while you listen, hear him, hear how he imbued love into every single second of music he made. That was his real legacy: Love.”

An Academy Honorary Award also went to the casting director Juliet Taylor, whose half-century career includes major credits such as Taxi Driver, Schindler’s List and Annie Hall.

Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award

The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, an accolade handed out to “creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production”, was given to Broccoli and Wilson.

The pair are most notable for producing films in the James Bond series, including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall.

Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award

Finally, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which honors “outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes”, went to the British screenwriter and director Richard Curtis. In addition to earning an Academy Award nod for the 1994 box-office smash Four Weddings and a Funeral, Curtis is also well known for major movies such as Love Actually, Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary.

“Curtis is the co-founder of Comic Relief UK and USA, and his fundraising work over 40 years has helped raise more than $2 billion and supported over 170 million people,” the Academy said in a statement announcing its honorary-award recipients last June.

Actor Hugh Grant - who has starred in several of Curtis’s films - told a light-hearted speech at the Governors Awards: “Not content with saving the British film industry, he decidedly he also had to try to save the whole bloody world. Something I found annoying.

“Because there I would be in one of the lulls in my career, because of some flop or some arrest, or whatever. And I’d be frankly desperate for Richard’s next film, and I’d be told: ‘I’m sorry, he’s away for a year in Africa, saving starving children.' I found that annoying and, frankly, selfish.”

Before 2009, the Academy’s honorary accolades were presented during the main Oscars ceremony. The winners are now honored during a short video montage at the Academy Awards, whose 97th edition takes place today.
