Da’Vine Joy Randolph: the story

Although Da’Vine has been acclaimed for her acting work, her first foray into the arts was at Temple University, where she focused on classical vocal performance and opera. However, in her third year, she switched to musical theatre.

According to USA TODAY, during her third year, she was set to play the lead role in Temple’s production of the opera ‘Aida’, but when she sought out an acting coach to help her with her performance, she was expelled from the opera program.

After graduating from Temple, she attended the Yale School of Drama, where she earned her master’s degree. She also studied at the British American Drama Academy and spent a summer studying Shakespeare at the University of Oxford.

The actress gained recognition for the first time for her portrayal of Oda Mae Brown in the Broadway production ‘Ghost: The Musical’ (2012), for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

She began receiving acclaim for her roles in ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ (2019) and ‘The United States vs. Billie Holiday’ (2020), and now with ‘The Holdovers’ (2023), she is the favorite to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. On the television front, her credits include ‘Selfie’ (2014), ‘This Is Us’ (2016), ‘People of Earth’ (2016-2017), ‘Empire’ (2017-2018), ‘High Fidelity’ (2020), ‘Only Murders in the Building’ (2021-present), and ‘The Idol’ (2023).
