SSI beneficiaries that could see double $1,400 payment in May

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to issue the last round of payments from the Social Security Program corresponding to the month of April 2024. Week after week, the government agency sends millions of checks to recipients ranging from retired workers to people with disabilities, as well as those who enrolled in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

The distribution system for these payments is for the most part linked to the date of birth of the beneficiaries. Recipients who were born between the 1st and 10th of the month will see their disbursement reflected on the second Wednesday of the month. Those whose date of birth is from the 11th to the 20th, will receive their funds on the third Wednesday, and those born between the 21st and 31st of month, you will get their payments on the last Wednesday of the month.

However, there are exceptions for people who retired before May 1997 and SSI beneficiaries, since they receive their payments during the first days of the month, regardless of their date of birth. If a beneficiary receives both Social Security payments, meaning they are retirees and SSI recipients, the SSA prioritizes sending SSI money on the first day of the month, followed by Social Security money on the third day.

How much can I receive from Social Security? Amounts and how they are calculated

The amount varies according to the situation of each beneficiary. Since the SSA evaluates factors such as work history, wages received, and taxes paid to Social Security during one’s worklife, the amount you receive varies depending on each beneficiary’s employment status. All of this data is used to calculate the “primary insurance amount,” which is subsequently adjusted according to the recipient’s retirement age. Those who retire later receive larger payments.

Official estimates from the Administration indicate that, with the 3.2% increase in the cost of living adjustment (COLA), the average payment for retirees in 2024 is $1,907 for individuals and $3,303 for couples filing taxes jointly. SSI recipients can expect an average payment of $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples.

Regarding the maximum benefit for different ages, the payment is $2,710 for individuals aged 62, $3,426 at age 65, and $3,652 at age 66. Those who wait until the full age of retirement can receive up to $3,822, while people who choose to delay their retirement until age 70 can access a maximum payment of $4,873.

How are Social Security payments issued?

Payments are sent via direct deposit to those who have provided a bank account to the Social Security Administration, which is now federally mandated since 2013. Less than one percent still receive their payment as a paper check via postal mail, which may take additional days to arrive.

The Social Security Administration recommends that those who still receive their benefits in the mail sign up for direct deposit either at their local office or using my Social Security account.

According to the SSA, if you don’t receive your payment when you expect it, wait three days to give allowance for additional shipping needs before contacting Social Security.
