Michelle Yeoh wins the 2023 Best Actress Oscar award
The win comes for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once
Michelle Yeoh has won the Best Actress Oscar award for her role as Evelyn Quan Wang in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
The 60-year-old beat out the likes of Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for her work as Lydia Tár in ‘Tár’, Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in ‘Blonde’, Andrea Riseborough as Leslie “Lee” Rowlands in ‘To Leslie’ and Michelle Williams as Mitzi Febelman in ‘The Fablemans’.
Yeoh’s win makes her the first women who identifies as Asian to take home the Best Actress category, and just the second woman of color after Halle Berry for ‘Monster’s Ball’ in 2001.
It also comes after she became the first Asian woman to win a SAG lead actress film award, while Blanchett won at the BAFTAs, Critics Choice and Golden Globes.
Yeoh rose to fame in the 1990s after starring in a string of Hong Kong action films where she performed her own stunts.
She gained international notoriety after starring in the 1997 James Bond film ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ and Ang Lee’s ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ in 2000.
The latter earned her a BAFTA Best Actress nomination, while the film itself was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score and Best Cinematography. It won for Best Foreign Language film.
Yeoh returned to prominence thanks to her work as Captain Philippa Georgiou/Emperor Philippa Georgiou on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ from 2017 to 2020, before receiving widespread acclaim in the 2022 hit ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
