The 95th Academy Awards ceremony is almost upon us, taking place on Sunday 12 March. The Oscars will be broadcast live from the Ovation Hollywood, the renamed Dolby Theatre, in Los Angeles starting at 8 pm ET. And while no one knows which movie or artist will receive one of the golden statuettes there are some definite favorites.
A number of films have been awarded nine or more nominations with ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ leading with 11 nods, followed by ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ with nine-apiece. While the judges for the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards don’t have a direct say who will win the coveted statuettes, their choices for the best have the critics and bookies believing they know.
Here’s a look at the top contenders for the biggest prizes and which actors and movies are the favorites.
Best Movie
‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, ‘Top Gun Maverick’ and ‘The Fabelmans’ are amongst the top ten contenders for Best Picture at the 95th Academy Awards. However, the favorite is a movie that has caught a lot of attention this year, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.
Best Director
The Oscar for Best Director category is comprised of completely of individuals that oversaw the creative process behind productions competing for Best Movie but only five have a chance. Todd Field, (Tár), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Ruben Ostlund (Triangle of Sadness) are all in the running but the odds are against them.
There are two who have already been recognized, Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) at the Golden Globes and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once) at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Vegas is betting that the latter will end up with a statuette on 12 March.
Best Actor
It’s down to a two-horse race leading up to the 2023 Oscars between Austin Butler and Brendan Fraser for the 2023 Best Actor award according to the odds. Bulter won Golden Globe Awards for his performance in ‘Elvis’. However, the Critics’ Choice Awards gave Best Actor to Fraser for his role in ‘The Whale’ and Vegas gives him better odds of winning.
Best Actress
The category of Best Actress includes Ana de Armas (Blonde), Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie), Michelle Williams (The Fablemans) who all gave powerful performances in their respective films. However, top of the list to win an Oscar this year are Cate Blanchett (Tár) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), both of whom won a Golden Globe in the category.
Blanchett took home the award at the Critics’ Choice Awards but Vegas is currently betting on Yeoh. However, the margin is tight in the run-up to the Oscars, good luck to both well-desiring actresses.
