To be eligible for the Oscar animated short films category, a film must meet certain criteria including a maximum running time of 40 minutes and a predominantly animated format. The films can be hand-drawn, computer-generated, or stop-motion animated, and they can be created using a variety of techniques and styles.

There are five nominated films this year. Here is how to watch them.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse

Based on the British children’s book of the same name, the hand-drawn film is directed by Charlie Mackesy and Peter Baynton.

In the US it can be watched on Apple TV+, while it is on BBC iPlayer in the UK.

The Flying Sailor

The film is based upon the largest accidental explosion of all-time, the Halifax Explosion in 1917, the film folows the experience of one sailor who was blown kilometres into the air. Creators Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby are previous Oscar nominees.

Ice Merchants

João Gonzalez heads this Portuguese film. It follows a father and son who must parachute from their hosue atop a snowy mountain to sell ice to the village below.

My Year of Dicks

Sara Gunnarsdóttir and Pamela Ribon tell this coming of age story.

The film is streaming on Hulu until 17 March.

An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake And I Think I Believe It

An office worker is surprised when his world is turned upside-down by a talking ostrich. I think this one could be my favourite due to its quirky premise.

Unfortunately the film is unable to be viewed except the rip on Vimeo.
