5 things you didn’t know about Matt Smith, Daemon Targaryen in “House of the Dragon”

‘House of the Dragon’, the spin-off series of ‘Game of Thrones’, comes to HBO. We share some things you likely don’t know about one of its main stars.

Sunday 21 August saw HBO welcome us to ‘House of Dragon’, the spin-off of the hugely successful ‘Game of Thrones’, which will address the history of the Targaryen family, the house where Daenerys, the mother of dragons or Khaleesi, came from.

The 10-part series is based on the book ‘Fire and Blood’ by George R.R. Martin and is set 200 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’. That’s why we’re sharing five things you probably didn’t know about Matt Smith, who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen.

He is the youngest Doctor Who in history

Smith became the youngest actor to play Doctor Who, taking on the role at the age of 26, beating out Peter Davison, who was 29 at the time of his casting in 1981.

He is known to be very clumsy

The actor is known for being "very clumsy," so much so that producers bet how long it will be before the props break.

He wanted to be a professional footballer

Smith originally planned to be a professional footballer, before his career was cut short by a back injury. He played for Northampton Town U11 and 12, Nottingham Forest U12, 13 and 14, then Leicester City Under-15s and 16s before back spondylosis forced him to pursue a different career.

He was about to be cast in BBC's Sherlock

Smith auditioned for the role of John Watson after Cumberbatch had already been cast as Sherlock; however, he did not keep the role. Sherlock creator Steven Moffat subsequently cast Smith as Doctor Who.

He is passionate about music

Smith plays guitar and has stated in several interviews that he has a large record collection. His favorite bands include Radiohead and Oasis. In Doctor Who, the actor was able to demonstrate his talent on the guitar.
