A Border Collie in an apartment? Secrets to keeping your urban puppy happy and healthy
Here’s how to keep your pooch happy indoors.

Living in an urban environment presents a number of challenges for Border Collies, a breed renowned for their intelligence and high energy levels.
Originally bred for herding livestock, these dogs possess an innate drive to work, which can lead to behavioural issues such as excessive barking, chewing, or anxiety if their physical and mental demands are unmet. This is why having a Border Collie in an urban environment could be a bad choice for you and your household.
However, it’s not all bad news; the That’ll Do Academy explain that there are a number of things you can do to keep you pooch pleased in the flat.
Variety in exercise
Routine walks in the same park may not suffice for a Border Collie. They thrive on varied experiences. Introducing car training early allows owners to transport their dogs to diverse locations like beaches, forests, or quiet trails, providing new stimuli and preventing boredom. This is essential for their mental well-being.
Ensuring off-leash time at least once a week in safe, open spaces is crucial for their physical and mental health.+
Border Collies are the best. They’re incredibly well behaved and execute instructions very well. There's a reason they've been used for farm work for centuries.

Caution with ball chasing
While playing fetch is a common activity, relying solely on it can be detrimental. Repetitive ball chasing may lead to a variety of problems:
- Development of obsessive behaviours, causing them to chase other moving objects like cars or cyclists.
- Strain injuries due to sudden stops and starts.
- Quick energy depletion without sufficient satisfaction.
A more beneficial approach involves structured games that combine physical activity with mental challenges, such as using a toy on a string and encouraging the dog to search and retrieve.
Essential urban skills for dogs
Training Border Collies in specific skills can ease urban living:
- Loose-Lead Walking: Prevents pulling and ensures control in crowded areas.
- Settle on a Mat: Teaches the dog to relax in public spaces like cafes or pubs.
- Emergency Stop: A critical command to halt the dog immediately, ensuring safety in unforeseen situations.
Border Collies are very likely the most intelligent breed of dog and this was confirmed by several studies.
