In the field of health, countless myths circulate online that attempt to justify and explain different symptoms or processes that occur within the human body. In most cases, these beliefs appear without any real foundation to support them. The real danger arises when people accept them as true without verifying their accuracy.

In this context, Antonio Escribano, a physician specializing in nutrition, addresses several myths related to being overweight and obesity, conditions that affect thousands of people in society: “One of the important issues when it comes to overweight and obesity is the enormous number of myths surrounding them,” he explains.

“For example, something very common, I see many patients in my practice who tell me, ‘I don’t understand why I gain weight, because I hardly eat,’” Escribano says. He then dispels the myth: “If a person eats more than they need, the excess is stored as fat. In other words, there is no such thing as someone gaining weight without eating,” he emphasizes.

“What happens is that people often feel like they eat very little because they might want to eat more. But if they are gaining weight, it is because they are eating more than they think,” the doctor continues. He then shifts focus to intermittent fasting, a nutritional strategy many people follow to lose weight.

“The only way is to eat very well”

“What does intermittent fasting involve? You go without eating for 12 hours, and during that time the body loses fat. But when you start eating again, the body learns that it is going long periods without food. And what does it do? It slows down the metabolism, and then it becomes easier to gain weight,” he warns.

Finally, Antonio Escribano rejects the use of “appetite suppressant pills,” stating that “there are no pills that eliminate appetite”: “The only way is to eat very well and in relatively small amounts, often much less than what a person thinks is ‘a little.’ Some people believe they eat nothing and still gain weight. That’s impossible,” he concludes.
