April brings one of the most spectacular moons: The full pink moon can be seen from these locations in the US

Easter is just around the corner and with it, and marking the occasion, a phenomenon that is one of the most anticipated events of the year. The Paschal Moon marks the first full Moon of spring - it appearance is used to determine the exact date on which Easter falls. Easter falls between March 22 and April 25, depending on when this full moon occurs.

Why is it called a Pink Moon?

It’s sometimes called the Pink Moon but that is a misnomer as the moon will be bright white as usual. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, “The name comes from the early spring bloom of a wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox. This flower, often called “moss pink,” was in full bloom around April’s full Moon".

The Pink Moon, therefore, isn’t an astronomical event that alters the satellite’s color but rather a cultural interpretation connected to nature’s rhythms. As one of the twelve full moons that occur each year, its name stands out for its deep association with the northern hemisphere’s springtime, especially the blooming of these vibrant pink flowers.

When is the 2025 Easter full moon?

The Pink Moon will reach peak illumination at 8:22 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. The full Moon occurs just before reaching apogee (the point when the Moon is farthest from Earth), on Sunday April 13, 2025, at 6:49 p.m. ET.

The 2025 Pink Moon will be positioned in the constellation of Virgo, not far from its brightest star, Spica.
