Update:

Costco is one of the largest department store chains in the United States and across the globe. While its product selection may not be as diverse as that of supermarkets such as Target or Walmart—due to the bulk-selling nature of many items—Costco often provides competitive pricing on certain products.

However, customers need to purchase a membership to shop at Costco, which may prompt many to opt for their local supermarket instead. Furthermore, although Costco offers low prices, particularly on its Kirkland brand, some items can be priced higher than those at Walmart’s Great Value brand or Target’s Good & Gather brand.

Look elsewhere for these seven products

Chicken Breasts - Comparing the prices of Costco’s Kirkland brand with other supermarkets, such as Walmart and Target, reveals that Kirkland chicken breast costs more than $3 per pound, while Target offers options for around $2.69, such as Good & Gather.

Tomatoes - Some fruits and vegetables, like tomatoes, are also more affordable at other supermarkets. Costco’s vine tomatoes cost almost $2 per pound, while 4 pounds cost nearly $8. Target, on the other hand, offers a pound of Roma tomatoes for $1.19. Walmart also offers lower prices.

Frozen Vegetables - Bags of frozen vegetables are often cheaper at Walmart, Target, and other supermarkets compared to Costco.

Apples - Similar to tomatoes, apples can be found at other supermarkets for less than at Costco. For example, 4 pounds of Honeycrisp apples are priced at around $11, or $2.75 per pound. In contrast, a 3-pound bag of Good & Gather apples at Target is priced at $7.39, or $2.46 per pound.

Milk - At Costco, a gallon of Kirkland brand whole milk and low-fat milk costs over $4, while prices are lower at Walmart and Target. For example, a gallon of Good & Gather whole milk at Target costs $1.99, and the low-fat version of the same brand is the same price.

Frozen Strawberries - Kirkland’s frozen whole strawberries, Costco’s own brand, are $11.69 for 4 pounds, while Good & Gather’s frozen strawberries are $9.29 for 4 pounds at Target.

Salmon - Salmon is another product that’s more expensive at Costco than at other supermarkets. For example, a 3-pound Kirkland frozen salmon fillet multi-portion package costs $37.19, or $12.39 per pound. On the other hand, Good & Gather frozen salmon fillet costs $10.99 per pound at Target.
