If Trump’s tariff plans proceed as proposed, the retailer’s shelves—and customers’ wallets—could feel the strain.

If Dollar Tree is your go-to for affordable essentials, you may soon notice empty shelves or higher prices. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada could significantly impact the discount retailer, forcing it to make decisions about its product offerings and pricing.

Dollar Tree, which imports around 40% of its products, faces a 60% tariff on Chinese goods. These tariffs target consumer items like hardware, electronics, food, and household products, categories that dominate Dollar Tree’s inventory.

The increased costs could lead the retailer to stop selling certain items altogether or reduce package sizes to maintain its low prices.

“We believe there is a wide range of potential actions that we can take to help mitigate additional tariffs if and when they materialize,” Dollar Tree interim CEO Michael Creedon said.

The situation is particularly challenging for Dollar Tree’s business model. After decades of maintaining a $1 price point, the company raised prices to $1.25 in 2021, after thr last round of tariffs, and introduced items priced up to $7.

However, additional tariffs may convince the company implement further price hikes or take more products from its shelves. Stock has fallen 40% in recent months and Dollar Tree may feel they can’t afford to cut revenue at such a time.
