Bank opening hours on Christmas Eve and Day 2024: Bank of America, Citi, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs
Christmas Day is one of the 11 federal holidays of the year, but is December 24 included?
Federal workers can count on a few guaranteed days of holiday every year, designated by federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103). Across 2024 there are 11 days that are listed as federal holidays, meaning that the majority of federal workers get the day off.
December 25, Christmas Day, is the last of those holidays for 2024. Christmas Eve is not a federal holiday but some banks will be operating modified hours on Christmas Eve.
Banks in the United States will be open on December 24 but check with your local branch to check the closing time to avoid a wasted journey. No banks will be open on Christmas Day.
Full list of 2025 federal holidays
Everyone knows that Christmas and Thanksgiving are federal holidays but some of them aren’t so well-known. Juneteenth National Independence Day was introduced in 2021 as a federal holiday, celebrating the ending of slavery in the US.
Next year Inauguration Day will be marked with a federal holiday on January 20, but only for federal employees in the Washington DC area.
Although the list of holidays rarely changes, there are some minor alterations every single year. When a federal holiday falls on a non-weekday - Saturday or Sunday - the holiday is observed on either the Friday or the following Monday. That is the case next year with Columbus Day, which marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. In 2025 that date falls on a Sunday, so the federal holiday will be observed on Monday, October 13, one day later than normal.
