‘Breast milk ice cream’ is a thing: Here’s what we know about the flavor that’s gone viral

Summer is here and ice cream sales will be going through the roof across the country. You may think that you’ve tried every flavor of the eternally popular frozen treat, but you probably haven’t tasted this one.

A New York ice cream manufacturer, OddFellows, has released a limited edition version that has sparked considerable outrage online. The new flavor? Breast milk.

The bizarre new release was actually confirmed earlier this year, when parent company Frida announced the new flavor. Now, the breast milk flavored ice cream is officially available to purchase online, shipping across the country.

Frida has made a big effort to publicize the new flavor on social media with the tagline: “Taste it for yourself,” alongside the branding for “Breast Milk Ice Cream”.

But while it may seem completely shocking, the reality is less off-putting. USA Today has confirmed that the ‘breast milk flavor’ ice cream, is not actually made using any human breast milk. Instead, the taste of the new product mimics it, supposedly.

A press release from Frida has confirmed the full list of ingredients: milk, heavy cream, skim milk powder, sugar, dextrose, egg yolks, invert sugar, guar gum, salted caramel flavoring, honey syrup, liposomal bovine colostrum, yellow food color, 0.1% propylparaben (preservative), and FD&C Red 40.

That statement also describes the flavor of their new ice cream, calling it “sweet, a little salty, smooth, with hints of honey and sprinkles of colostrum, and features a distinct colostrum yellow tinge."

Those living in New York can also taste the new flavor at a pop-up event at the OddFellows site in Dumbo, Brooklyn this week. You can try the ‘breast milk-flavored’ ice cream from Tuesday, August 5 to Sunday, August 10.
