Bruce Springsteen joins long list of singers and celebrities supporting Kamala Harris for US president
Kamala Harris continues to gain support for her presidential bid as more celebrities back the Democratic candidate in the 2024 elections.
Last July, current President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from his re-election bid. The president offered his full support to Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him and face Donald Trump in the general election on November 5 with the move seeing the Democratic candidate move ahead of Trump in the polls.
According to the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll, Harris and Trump are in a tight race, with 48% of voters backing the Democrat and 47% favoring the Republican. In addition to voter preference, Harris’ support among public figures has also seen a considerable increase.
Celebrities who support Kamala Harris
George Clooney was one of the first celebrities to publicly call for Joe Biden to withdraw from the race. Once this happened, the Hollywood veteran did not hesitate to express his support for Harris.
Another celebrity who spoke out early in support of the Democrat is Barbra Streisand, who said Harris won her vote thanks to her promise to fight for reproductive rights. Musician John Legend has mentioned being “very ready” for a Harris presidency, while director Spike Lee and actors Mark Hamill, Rosie O’Donnell and Jamie Lee Curtis have also expressed they were backing the vice president.
Taylor for Kamala
In early September, Taylor Swift also nailed her colours to the mast with a lengthy Instagram post confirming her intention to vote Democrat: “I‘m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos”.
Swift is one of the most influential voices currently in the USA and commands a massive following of devoted younger fans on social media with her backing of the Harris campaign a major boost for the Democrats.
Support for Harris has also increased among Gen Z voters. Singer/actress Olivia Rodrigo and singer/songwriter Charlie XCX are the youngest artists to come out to rally behind her with Billie Eilish also lending her support to the Harris/Walz campaign.
Other big names in music who have shown their support for Harris include Beyoncé, Megan The Stallion and Cardi B.
The ‘White Dudes for Harris’ movement
Meanwhile, a fund-raising campaign for the vice president dubbed “White Dudes for Harris” was streamed on YouTube and raised more than $4 million. Celebrities joined the event conducted via Zoom, among them actors Jeff Bridges, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Mark Hamill, and singer Josh Groban. Organizers said they came up with the name to show that the MAGA right does not have a monopoly on the votes of white men.
The “Boss” gets on board
Rock icon Bruce Springsteen is the latest high profile musician to publicly endorse Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris Thursday becoming the latest celebrity to back the vice president against Donald Trump.
The New Jersey native shared a video on Instagram saying “Donald Trump is the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime.”
The ‘Boss’ concluded his short video stating: “Now, everybody sees things different and I respect your choice as a fellow citizen. But like you, I’ve only got one vote, and it’s one of the most precious possessions that I have. That’s why come November 5 I’ll be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Thanks for listening.”
