Claudia Sheinbaum reacts to the death of ‘El Mencho’, leader of the CJNG
The President of Mexico has confirmed the killing of the notorious drug lord.
Chaos erupted in the Mexican city of Guadalajara on Sunday following the news that drug gang boss Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes - El Mencho - had been killed in a law enforcement strike. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed the success of the operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, which resulted in the death of the drug trafficker.
Writing on social media, Sheinbaum said: “There is absolute coordination with the governments of all states... In the vast majority of the national territory, activities are proceeding with complete normality.”
Who was El Mencho?
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes was a Mexican drug trafficker and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the most powerful and violent criminal organizations in Mexico.
He was born on July 17, 1966 in the state of Michoacán and began his criminal career in activities related to drug trafficking after having lived in the United States, where he was also arrested for drug-related offenses.
Under his leadership, the CJNG expanded nationally and internationally, engaging in drug trafficking, money laundering and other organized crimes, which led Mexican and U.S. authorities to identify him as one of the most wanted criminals in the world.
What is known about the death of El Mencho?
According to information published by N+ and El Universal, Oseguera Cervantes was reportedly killed during a large-scale operation by Mexican security forces.
This has led to various blockades in different parts of the country, including Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima, Guerrero, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Nayarit, Zacatecas, and Tamaulipas. Sports events in Mexico over the weekend have been postponed as a result, with concern over spectator safety.
