DAP revealed: The U.S. attack helicopter no one knew about until Venezuela
The helicopter that went unnoticed, yet changed everything in the United States operation in Venezuela.

What many imagined as an operation dominated by drones or invisible technology turned out to have a far more imposing and far less cinematic protagonist: the MH-60M Direct Action Penetrator, or DAP.
This specialized combat helicopter now embodies the most aggressive and stealth-focused approach of U.S. special operations forces. Far from being a simple armed transport variant, the DAP was created in response to the most hostile scenarios imaginable.
From its inception, it was designed to operate in complex urban environments, fly at extremely low altitude at night, and deliver precision firepower without relying on unmanned systems. Assigned for decades to the legendary 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, also known as the Night Stalkers, this aircraft was one of the pillars of the U.S. incursion into Venezuela in January 2026.

This is the DAP, the best kept secret of the U.S., in Venezuela
What sets the DAP apart is not only its firepower, comparable to that of dedicated attack helicopters, but also its modular versatility. AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, APKWS guided rockets, heavy machine guns, and 30 mm cannons can all be integrated into a single airframe that can be reconfigured within hours depending on the mission.
Its greatest strength, however, was paradoxically its operational invisibility. Equipped with avionics for extreme night operations and advanced sensors that combine thermal imaging, LIDAR, and laser designators, the DAP can move where other helicopters would not dare to go.
It skims the terrain and avoids detection in environments that would be considered impossible missions for other aircraft.
In addition, self-protection systems such as missile warning sensors, active electronic warfare, and automatic countermeasures, including the CIRCM system (Common Infrared Countermeasures), turn this aircraft into a flying fortress. It can detect, evade, and counter emerging threats without direct crew intervention.
The operation in Venezuela not only revealed these capabilities, but also suggested advances that many analysts consider a leap forward in modern warfare. There were indications of drones being launched from the helicopter itself, capable of extending its effective reach or confusing defenses before the arrival of the main forces.
At a time when narratives of contemporary warfare favor images of stealth drones or autonomous robots, the public appearance of the DAP is a reminder that the most decisive air power can still reside in manned platforms, designed to enter the darkness and return silently, rather than make spectacular appearances on a screen.
