Update:

In a live stream pitched to over 200 million followers, Elon Musk said the quiet part very loud.

On Monday night, during a virtual campaign rally for a conservative Supreme Court candidate in Wisconsin, the billionaire tech CEO-turned-Trump adviser said this: “Yes. In fact, I believe someone is going to be arrested tomorrow.”

He was talking about alleged social security fraud and claimed that a suspect had stolen 400,000 Social Security numbers and was selling them for profit, stating that the personal data was being “used to basically steal money from Social Security.”

“Yes, we are going to be prosecuting people,” Musk continued, naming U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi as the person leading the action. “The attorney general is taking action.”

What did Elon Musk reveal—and how did he know?

To many observers, this is only good news, but federal investigators aren’t so happy. According to several sources speaking to ABC News, Musk appeared to reference a real, ongoing federal investigation. And while the tech magnate didn’t say how he knew an arrest was coming, previewing law enforcement activity before it happens is generally frowned upon, and could even compromise the operation itself.

Musk’s comments reportedly irritated senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the probe, though the Justice Department has so far declined to comment. The White House, equally tight-lipped, referred questions back to DOJ.

If there’s substance behind the claims, prosecutions will follow in due course. If there’s not, questions will swirl about how much Musk knew, and why he said it when he did.
