Estados Unidos Update:

Consumer trends have shifted in the United States, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. While two decades ago, brands like CVS and Rite Aid were popular destinations for patients to fill prescriptions, these chains have struggled to keep up. Their massive physical footprint became too costly in a world where there is increasing demand to have prescriptions mailed directly to a person’s home.

Which states will see the highest number of Rite Aid closures?

Since its initial bankruptcy filing in October 2023, Rite Aid has submitted 19 additional notices to add more stores to its closure list. Below is a complete list of the states affected and the number of stores closed in each:

  • California (348)
  • Connecticut (15)
  • Delaware (29)
  • Idaho (8)
  • Maryland (23)
  • Massachusetts (4)
  • New Hampshire (49)
  • New Jersey (61)
  • New York (179)
  • Ohio (4)
  • Oregon (48)
  • Pennsylvania (354)
  • Vermont (5)
  • Virginia (26)
  • Washington (134).

What happened to Rite Aid?

When a company cannot pay its creditors but wants to continue operating, it can file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy under U.S. law. In this case, the iconic pharmacy chain declared bankruptcy in 2023 after accumulating billions of dollars in debt.

Since then, the company has closed underperforming locations to optimize profits. However, these efforts have not been enough to strengthen its overall financial performance and remain viable. As a result, the chain has decided to shut down another round of stores across the U.S.

Recently, Rite Aid appeared before the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to file a new store closure notice, adding seven more locations and announcing the liquidation of its assets. The total number of stores slated for closure now stands at 1,288.
