From JD Vance to the Secretary of Defense: Who was in the group chat where plans to attack Yemen were shared with a journalist?
A look at the Signal group chat full of Trump administration officials, The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg found himself included inadvertently.

The Trump administration is facing major backlash after The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, revealed that he had been inadvertently added to a Signal group chat with high-level federal officials where war plans were shared. The military plans, sent by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, initially seemed dubious to Goldberg. However, he soon realized their authenticity when the operations began unfolding in Yemen.
Who else was in the chat?
Goldberg was added by White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who is facing mounting pressure to resign or be fired. A total of 18 members were involved in the chat, according to Goldber, with other reported members including:
- Vice President JD Vance
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio
- Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent
- Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth
- Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard
- CIA Director John Ratcliffe
- Middle East and Ukraine negotiator Steve Witkoff
- White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles
- Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller.
The use of Signal, the app where the conversation occurred, raises questions about the security of private discussions among government officials that are conducted outside of federal servers. This concern about utilizing non-government servers was a significant topic during Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, particularly highlighting Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as a criminal act.
