Good news for Walmart employees: This is the new benefit that will help them save on groceries

Walmart is making a rare move that actually puts workers first: it’s broadening its employee discount program so staff can save on almost all grocery items. Until now, workers only got 10% off fresh produce and general merchandise. Starting this week, that same discount applies to meat, dairy, frozen food, pantry staples—roughly 95% of grocery products in stores and online.

The change was unveiled at a leadership meeting in Houston by Walmart’s Chief People Officer, Donna Morris, who emphasised that this improvement had topped the list of employee wish-list items. Eligible associates, both full-time and part-time, can tap into this benefit after completing just 90 days on the job.

This might sound like a small corporate gesture, but in the context of America’s cost-of-living crunch, it matters. Families are still paying more for basics like eggs, beef, and coffee—even despite what Donald Trump tells us. While Trump spends more time shouting about conspiracies and culture wars than addressing real economic pressures, Walmart’s move highlights a contrast: a private company is stepping in where government leadership often falls short.

This move aligns Walmart more closely with rivals like Target and Whole Foods, where employee discounts are broader and available from day one.

Beyond the discount, Walmart has been enhancing its overall benefits package. In recent years, the company has raised managerial wages, introduced bonuses for hourly employees, and now added this grocery perk to bolster both recruitment and retention efforts.

At its core, this expanded discount is about easing pressure on employees’ household budgets. At the same time, it keeps Walmart competitive in tight labour markets and underlines its commitment to listen to what workers are asking for.
