iPhone 17 Air features

Rumor has it the tech giant will release their new iPhone 17 series in September 2025, including the iPhone 17 Air, expected to be the thinnest model ever produced (between 5.5 and 6.25 mm).

According to reports, the Air edition’s distinctive but streamlined appearance means it will only have a single back camera and use the base A19 chip rather than the more powerful A19 Pro chip, which will run on the Pro and Pro Max versions of the phone. That, though, will help keep the price down.

But the main design feature which had been rumored was the lack of a charging port.

Why Apple decided against wireless charging for iPhone 17 Air

Instead, the iPhone Air 17 would be charged using wireless charging pads, which transmit power wirelessly using electromagnetic induction. Many, of course, already exist, although not as the sole means of charging.

In the end, Apple have ultimately decided against it for the iPhone 17 Air, even though they have the capability to do it.

That is down to the fact they were unsure as to whether it would be legal in the European Union. In October 2022, the European Parliament (EP) ruled that USB Type-C would become the standard for portable devices for charging and data transfers, a mandate that came into effect at the end of 2024.

However, it has now been confirmed the ruling only applies if devices use cables for charging and data transfers, which isn’t mandatory. Apple can therefore sell phone with no charging ports or cables, although the confirmation comes too late for the iPhone Air 17.

You can, however, expect to see the change in the very near future, and other brands will likely follow Apple’s lead.
