Goodbye to this well-known JCPenney store in California: this is the location that will close in February 2026 in the Bay Area
The troubled clothing retailer brings to an end a tough year, marked by a number of store and warehouse closures across the United States.

More bad news for troubled clothing retailer JCPenney with confirmation that it’s store at Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton, California will be closing in the New Year.
Bay Area location to close in February
A company spokesman said that the store will remain open at the mall until February 22, 2026, and explained: “Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market. We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Pleasanton, CA, location through the years”.
It is not known if any employees will be laid off as a result of the closure or whether they will be relocated to other stores in the Bay Area.
The news brings to an end a difficult year for JCPenney who completed a round of closures back in May with eight stores lowering the shutters for good.
Founded in 1902, the company has 647 locations in the United States and Puerto Rico but has struggled during the 21st Century. The retailer was hit by dwindling sales due to the rise of internet shopping then was dealt another body blow with the Covid pandemic, which saw revenue further decline.
Bankruptcy, RSA and merger
JCPenney filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in Texas in May 2020. The company entered a restructuring support agreement (RSA) with lenders in a bid to to reduce its debts and strengthen its financial position. During the past five years alone, it has closed 200 locations.
While no reason has been given for this month’s closures, it is believed that they may be due to expiring 20-year lease agreements along with other factors, although the company stresses it is unrelated to the brand’s merger with the SPARC Group back at the start of the New Year.
JCPenney is not the only department store to announce store closures, Macy’s and Kolhs have made similar moves as the brands have also struggled in the new consumption environment.
