Greenland residents aren’t fans of Donald Trump or the United States: “He’s out of his mind. Really. He’s losing his mind”

Trump won’t let go of his plans for the United States to acquire Greenland by any means necessary, despite American voter being strongly opposed to the idea. In a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, only 17% of respondents supported purchasing the ice-covered island. When it came to using military to take control of the autonomous Danish territory, that number dropped to just 4%.

Opposition to the idea is just as strong on the island itself. A poll last year by Verian found that only 6% of Greenlanders thought joining the US would be a good idea compered to 85% who were against Trump’s proposal.

As he has ramped up his rhetoric in recent days, while appearing and sounding more and more unhinged, people on Greenland have been making that opposition more vocal and visible. Greenlanders have even given a new meaning to his MAGA acronym, “Make America Go Away.”

“We would rather stay with Denmark thank you”

Tillie Martinussen, a former member of Greenland’s parliament, the Inatsisartut, speaking to APT News explained why Greenlanders do not want to be a part of the United States.

“Even if you were to say $100,000 per Greenlander, we wouldn’t give up free healthcare, we wouldn’t give up free education, we wouldn’t give up being a part of Europe, we wouldn’t give up on our sovereignty,” Martinussen shared.

“We are a very sovereign people within the Kingdom of Denmark, we are autonomous right now,” she added.

“We don’t want to be rich like the Americans are. See how greedy they are? They are even trying to shoot their friends, or invade friends, just for greed,” Martinussen said. She pointed out that the resources in the ground of Greenland that Trump covets are worth much more than what America has and can offer.

“Even if we didn’t have that we would still not be bought,” she said pointing to how the US has treated Native peoples within its borders. “Everyone here knows about the Innuit in Alaska and all of the Native Tribes and American Indians who are there. Their land was taken from them and they haven’t been treated that well in America,” Martinussen highlighted.

“And we know that Trump is very much surrounding himself with at least the White Power people and we are not White as you can see,” she continued. “We are of color, so we know our rights probably would be taken away,” Martinussen predicted, later saying that the images coming from America of ICE raids were “unsettling.”

“From here it looks like he’s going after brown people and we are considerably brown people as you can see,” she reflected. “We would rather stay with Denmark thank you.”

On the one hand it’s not a laughing matter, with European nations sending military contingents to Greenland in the wake of Trump upping his rhetoric over taking the island by force, if necessary. But one pensioner couldn’t resist.

“It’s queer. He’s odd. He’s out of his mind. Really. He’s losing his mind. Well, he lost it a long time ago,” the man told a journalist. “It’s a bit like a spoiled child turned old, and he’d think he can.”

“He thinks he can scare people. He can’t scare Greenlanders. We’re not scared. We’ll fight until the end and we’ll never give in,” the pensioner added.
