Guaranteed basic income program is on the way: Check if you qualify to receive the $5,400 payment
A new initiative is poised to benefit low-income households by offering them a significant annual cash injection.


Some residents of Alabama’s capital city, Montgomery, are set for a cash boost of over $5,000 a year, as part of a forthcoming scheme benefiting low-income households.
Montgomery mayor “tackling economic insecurity”
As reported by Montgomery media outlet WSFA 12 News, Democratic mayor Steven L. Reed has pledged to introduce a guaranteed basic income program for single mothers in the city.
The initiative aims to “provide direct financial assistance to families, tackling economic insecurity and fostering resilience,” Reed said, per WSFA’s Simon Schuessler.

The city of Montgomery will debut a Guaranteed Basic Income Program in 2025 “to provide direct financial assistance to families, tackling economic insecurity and fostering resilience.”

How much is the guaranteed basic income and what are the eligibility requirements?
Schuessler reports that the scheme has been designed to help 100 single mothers in Montgomery by paying them an additional $5,400 a year.
To qualify, they must have a child aged five or below, and an annual income that is under 130% of the federal poverty level set by the U.S.’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
How much is 130% of the federal poverty level?
In U.S. states, districts and territories other than Alaska and Hawaii, the following amounts represent 130% of the federal poverty level in 2025, according to the HHS:
Family of one: $20,345
Family of two: $27,495
Family of three: $34,645
Family of four: $41,795
Family of five: $48,945
Family of six: $56,095
Family of seven: $63,245
Family of eight: $70,395
The guaranteed basic income program has been conceived in partnership with the Mustard Seed Project, a non-profit organization focused on “uplifting low-income and unhoused individuals or families”.
“We strive for a world in which all individuals have the right to basic needs, comfort in their own personal safety, and opportunity to rise above their situation,” the Mustard Seed Project says on its website.
