A parenting approach that prioritizes emotions is gaining popularity, but implementing it isn’t always straightforward.

Update:

Emotional intelligence-based education has become one of the most popular ways to teach young children, aiming to help them recognize their own emotions and those of others as they grow into adulthood. However, this kind of education is not always easy to implement, as traditional teaching methods have long placed greater emphasis on academic achievement.

Raising children through emotional awareness

Parenting coach and conscious parenting expert Reem Rouda has spent years studying 200 parent-child relationships where emotional intelligence plays a central role in upbringing. Her research led her to identify seven key behaviors for positive parenting

The first is the power of silence in managing emotions. When children were upset, sad, or in the middle of a tantrum, parents chose to sit beside them in silence, offering comfort without words. The second key behavior involved helping children name their feelings from an early age, enabling them to express and share emotions rather than suppress them.

The importance of validating all emotions

The third behavior observed among emotionally intelligent parents was their willingness to admit mistakes and apologize to their children, helping them feel valued and modeling empathy. The fourth was avoiding the enforcement of phrases like “please,” “thank you,” and “I’m sorry.” Instead of correcting children when they forgot to use these expressions, parents would say them on their behalf, allowing them to internalize the habit over time.

Another key factor was validating children’s emotions, no matter how small their concerns seemed. Acknowledging their worries and feelings helped foster self-esteem and emotional security. Additionally, these parents encouraged independent decision-making, resisting the urge to solve every problem for their children and instead guiding them toward critical thinking and autonomy.

Embrace boredom

Finally, creativity and emotional self-regulation were strengthened through embracing boredom. Teaching children to enjoy their own company or engage in less stimulating activities – such as watching the world pass by through a car window instead of relying on a screen – proved essential. Ultimately, Rouda emphasizes that building relationships based on mutual respect and trust between parents and children is the foundation for emotionally intelligent parenting.
