How far is it from Westminster to Buckingham Palace and what streets are on King Charles III’s coronation route?
Two processions will take place in London either side of King Charles III’s Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey.
It would be something of an understatement to say the streets of London are going to be packed to the rafters on Saturday 6 May. Charles III will have his formal coronation as King of the United Kingdom, with the Coronation Service, which takes place at Westminster Abbey at 11am local time (6am ET) the main event, as far as the formalities as concerned.
How many people are expected to attend the processions in London?
Only 2,200 guests will be able to attend the ceremony, considering fewer than the reported 8,000 who were invited to Queen Elizabeth II’s official coronation, but over a million people are expected to line the streets of London to catch a glimpse of King Charles and Queen Camilla. And they’ll have two opportunities to do so.
Two processions will take place, one before the ceremony (The King’s Procession) and another after (The Coronation Procession) and will be a mirror image of one another, following the exact same route but in opposite directions.
How far is it from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey?
The King’s Procession will take the King and Queen from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, with the route covering a distance of 1.42 miles. The procession will begin at 10.20 am local (5.20 am ET) and should take around 30 minutes.
What route will the processions follow?
The King’s Procession will travel along The Mall after leaving Buckingham Palace, before passing through Admiralty Arch and to the south of the King Charles I Island in Trafalgar Square.
From there it will turn down Whitehall and continue onto Parliament Street before arriving at Westminster Abbey via the east and south sides of Parliament Square and finally Broad Sanctuary.
When will the Coronation Procession begin?
Following the ceremony, the much grander Coronation Procession is expected to start at around 1pm local time (8am ET), with Charles and Camilla returning to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach. They will be drawn by eight Windsor Grey horses at walking pace, meaning their return journey will take considerably longer. As mentioned, it will follow the same route in reverse.
