Adrian has intensified into the first hurricane in the Eastern Pacific for the season, while Tropical Storm Beatriz is forecast to strengthen into the second.

Hurricane Adrian quickly developed into a Category 1 hurricane as it was over 300 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. It is headed out to sea and is not expected to be a threat to land, which is why no watches or warnings have been put in place. The hurricane is expected to reach peak intensity Friday morning and gradually weaken in the afternoon. It is then forecast to weaken rapidly over the weekend.

Tropical Storm Beatriz could bring heavy rainfall and flooding

Tropical Storm Beatriz formed in the wake of Adrian off the south-central coast of Mexico. It is intensifying as it travels northwestward parallel to the Mexican coast. It is forecast to become a hurricane on Friday and eventually hit the coastline near the container port of Manzanillo.

The storm has maximum winds of 40 miles per hour. Hurricane warnings have been issued for parts of the Mexican coast, which could expect hurricane-force winds of over 75 mph. There are a number of resort towns in this area.

The storm could bring about locally heavy rainfall, storm surge, and flash flooding, as well as produce high surf and rip currents to some areas of the Pacific coast of Mexico over the weekend, from the state of Oaxaca to the state of Jalisco.

Neither Adrian nor Beatriz is expected to affect the US.

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season was off to a late start. By calendar definition it begins May 15 and runs until Nov. 30. The first named storm usually develops on June 24. The Eastern Pacific typically experiences more storms than the tropical Atlantic.
