Update:

As the summer months approach, many might have more time to spend looking at the stars. With warmer weather, stargazing can be a more enjoyable pastime. Coming up this week is the June full moon, known as the Strawberry Moon.

When will the June full moon be visible?

In the United States, the full moon will be visible after midnight on 11 June, with the celestial body starting to rise on the evening of the 10th.

Earthsky, an outlet covering celestial events, reported that this year’s June moon will be ‘riding lower’ than it has in decades.

“All full moons have their own special characteristics,“ explained the outlet, adding that ”it’s a characteristic of the June full moon to ride low in the sky, as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.“ However, this year, viewers will be in for a treat as the moon continues to overcome the Major Lunar Standstill, which happens every 18.6 years, as the Sun tugs the moon slightly out of its orbit. Though the cycle ended earlier this year, says the space blog, it will impact the trajectory of the June moon, pushing it down closer to the horizon, making for a special viewing experience.

" This full moon occurred during the month of June, when strawberries were ripening and ready to be harvested. The name “Strawberry Moon” has been passed down through generations and continues to be used by many today," explained the space agency in a blog about the event.
