Florida is preparing for the impact of Hurricane Milton. Two weeks after Helene made landfall as a Category 4 cyclone in the Big Bend region, the west-central coast of Florida is facing the arrival of a new tropical storm, which will make landfall as a Category 5 hurricane.

According to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Milton will make landfall between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. (local time) on Thursday, October 10. Authorities are forecasting destructive and deadly storm surges along the west-central coast of the Florida peninsula.

Milton is currently advancing toward the west coast with winds of 150 mph, which places the storm between category 4 and 5. However, it is expected to reach the maximum category on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale by the time it makes landfall; which would be the worst storm in the Tampa region in the last 100 years.

Given the magnitude and impact of the event, Florida is conducting its largest evacuation in seven years. According to Governor Ron DeSantis, the Sunshine State has a wide range of resources to respond to the hurricane, including the implementation of 155 shelters, with the capacity to house up to 200,000 people. At the time of writing, Wednesday afternoon, October 9, is the deadline for evacuation.

Please remember to take all neccesary precautions and leave nothing to chance.
