Loneliness-stricken elderly woman overhears her grandchildren’s toughest conversation: “As if they were planning a picnic”
Talking about what will need to be taken care of when a loved one dies is difficult, but if it isn’t handled with fineness, it may result in a surprise.

Making preparations for the day when an elderly relative will pass away can be an unpleasant conversation but one that must be had to plan for the eventual. However, how one goes about discussing what will surely be a sad day should be done with fineness, lest you hurt the feelings of those involved, especially those of the person in question.
The story of a 74-year-old woman named Martha is a perfect example of this. Cadena SER recently shared what happened when she overheard her family nonchalantly speaking about their funeral plans for her.
“They talked about it like they were planning a picnic”
Martha has been living in a nursing home in Germany for the past four years. However, loneliness and isolation have been a constant during those years as she has been mostly by herself during that time.
Although she has three children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, her family rarely visited. But that changed when her health took a turn for the worse.
Martha’s family went from visiting her less than five times a year to making frequent trips to see her at the nursing home. They also began showing a level of concern and kindness to which she had become unaccustomed.
So it was even more painful when Martha during a phone conversation overheard the family discussing their funeral plans for her. “They talked about it like they were planning a picnic,” she told ‘AmoMama’.
She heard that they had picked out and reserved a burial plot for her as well as a headstone.
Don’t bury grandma before its time
Fortunately, Martha’s health improved but she was heartbroken by what she had heard. So, she made the decision to change how she would pass on her substantial fortune and gathered the family together to let them know about it.
In her will, Martha told them that she was leaving each member of the family a single euro. She decided to dedicate the remainder of her money that they would’ve inherited to traveling and charitable causes.
