These are the surprising clothes banned in NY as of January 2025 to prevent cancer
The ban is part of a growing trend to limit chemical exposure, with California and Colorado implementing similar restrictions.
New York has implemented a groundbreaking law banning the sale of certain new apparel containing PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”. New York Bill S1322/A994 bans their intential use in clothing.
The list of what is included is pretty long, including:
- undergarments,
- shirts,
- pants,
- skirts,
- dresses,
- overalls,
- bodysuits,
- vests,
- dancewear,
- suits,
- saris,
- scarves, tops,
- leggings,
- leisurewear,
- formal wear,
- outdoor apparel,
- onesies,
- bibs,
- diapers
While the ban covers most everyday apparel, there are some exceptions. Outdoor apparel for severe wet conditions will not be subject to the ban until January 1, 2028. Additionally, professional uniforms and personal protective equipment are excluded from the prohibition.
There are civil penalties up to $1,000 for each day a company violates the law and up to $2,500 for a second violation added on top. Sellers will not be held in violation of the statute if they relied on assurances from the manufacturer.
Why are PFAS so dangerous?
PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are considered dangerous due to their widespread occurrence, persistence in the environment, and potential to accumulate in the human body.
Studies have shown an increased risk of certain cancers, including kidney, testicular, and prostate cancer. PFAS can reduce the body’s ability to fight infections and decrease vaccine response.
The danger of PFAS is compounded by their widespread use in numerous products, resulting in multiple exposure routes for humans.
