Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum had her own ideas for changes in the map after President-elect Donald Trump’s recent pronouncements.

Sheinbaum said North America could perhaps be called “Mexican America” after Trump announced he would be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

He added his administration would be announcing a date for the change soon, and that the renaming was going to happen “because we do most of the work there, and it’s ours.”

During a press conference, Sheinbaum pointed to a 17th century world map showing the Americas and the Gulf of Mexico, where the early depiction was named “Mexican America.”

Sheinbaum responds with a history lesson

The Mexican president appeared at her daily conference at National Palace in Mexico City with former culture minister Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real and a host of old maps to give a lesson in history.

“The fact is that Mexican America is recognized since the 17th century... as the name for the whole northern part of the (American) continent,” said Suarez del Real said, pointing out the area on the map.

The former minister said the body of water’s name has been used internationally, and that it has been a reference in maritime navigation for centuries. The Gulf of Mexico is an ocean basin flanked mostly by the North American continent.

Trump made the comments about renaming the gulf during a press conference where also mentioned the possibility of seizing control of Greenland and the Panama Canal.
