Update:

Former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to Sophia Bush on her Work in Progress podcast, where she had one clear aim: put the divorce rumours to bed.

For what feels like a long time now, rumours have spread over an alleged break up between herself and Barack Obama, despite nothing of the sorts being confirmed.

The 61-year-old also revealed what life has been like since leaving the White House in 2017, making way for Donald Trump’s first term.

It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” Michelle admitted. “I have to make sure the girls are okay, or my husband’s president, so I can’t do that.”

‘I could have made a lot of these decisions years ago’

“You know, I can’t blame my decisions and indecisions on anyone other than me. I think if I’m honest with myself, I could have made a lot of these decisions years ago. But I didn’t give myself that freedom”, she added.

Addressing the divorce rumours, she was pretty clear on her feelings regarding the situation: “the interesting thing is that”, she added, “when I say ‘no,’ for the most part people are like, ‘I get it, and I’m okay. That’s the thing that we as women... we struggle with disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year people were... they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”

She continued, “This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right? But that’s what society does to us. We start actually, finally going, ‘What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?’ And if it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible.”
