Estados Unidos Update:

Winter weather persists in the United States. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), an icy storm system is set to reach the Midwest and Northeast midweek, bringing freezing rain and snowfall to several states.

Low temperatures and precipitation are expected to begin on the morning of Wednesday, February 5, and continue until Thursday, February 6. States in the Midwest can expect freezing rain, while those in the Northeast should brace for possible snowfalls.

Which states can expect freezing rain?

Freezing rain will occur from Michigan’s lower peninsula to the Mid-Atlantic states — Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. — as well as southern New England. According to AccuWeather meteorologists, Maryland and Pennsylvania could be hardest hit, and areas such as Harrisburg, Scranton, State College, Williamsport and Cumberland are under alert for possible ice accumulation.

“Icy storms are incredibly dangerous. A thin layer of ice can create hazardous driving conditions on bridges, highways and ramps in a matter of seconds. An accumulation of just half an inch of ice can add 500 pounds of extra weight or more to power lines. Families and businesses should be prepared for the risk,” warns Jonathan Porter, chief meteorologist at AccuWeather.

States expecting snowfall

This new storm system will also bring snow “from North Dakota and central and northern Minnesota to northern New York and northern New England,” warns Weather.com.
