Neither China nor Russia: This is the only country in the world that doesn’t recognize U.S. independence

When asked which country doesn’t recognize the independence of the United States, many might immediately guess China, Russia or North Korea. But the truth is quite different. It’s actually Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom nestled in the eastern Himalayas with a population of just around 730,000, famously known as the happiest country on Earth.

The reason Bhutan doesn’t recognize U.S. independence

The U.S. declared its independence in 1776, and even after nearly 250 years, it’s surprising that Bhutan doesn’t officially recognize that independence. Why is that? First off, it’s nothing personal. Bhutan takes the same stance with other major powers like China, France, the U.K. and Russia.

Bhutan’s longstanding commitment to neutrality

Very few nations are officially recognized by Bhutan. This tiny Himalayan kingdom has historically embraced a policy of strict neutrality on the global stage. That’s why it has avoided formal diplomatic ties with most countries outside its immediate neighborhood, maintaining relations mainly with neighboring Bangladesh, India, and Nepal.

Although Bhutan joined the United Nations in 1971, it has no diplomatic relations with any of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council. Rooted in its Buddhist culture and a strong desire to preserve its national identity, Bhutan limits foreign influence as a way to safeguard its sovereignty. That said, it still maintains friendly, unofficial ties around the world and even has a permanent mission to the U.N. in New York City.
