The group behind FreeXP

Though the product is taken from Windows, which no longer provides security updates for devices running the OS, FreeXP, does. Windows Forum, an online tech outlet, describes FreeXP as “a community-driven project powered by Debian Linux.” Linux is responsible for an entire lineup of operating systems, attractive to those who wish to stay away from Apple and Windows products. The organization behind the open source product provides some credibility, as it has built-in a security system that users of Windows XP would lack today. Additionally, the project forms part of Debian’s wider goal of creating operation systems for older devices that are unable to run newer versions.

How to download FreeXP

Those who in their day installed Windows XP may remember a slew of CDs that were used in the installation process. FreeXP can be downloaded two ways, one of which will require a disk drive or a USB port. However, there are also options that avoid the need for CDs and USB drives, though they are not the route recommended by Source Forge. Windows Forum explains that the ability to run the operating system from a USB drive allows potential users to test it out before committing.
