New poll reveals the historical figures Americans want to see on US dollars and coins
A new YouGov poll asked the US public which historical figures they want to see on their currency. Here were the most and least popular candidates.

Tired of seeing the same faces on your U.S. dollars, pennies, nickels, and other coins? You’re not alone. A new poll from YouGov reveals that aside from George Washington and Abraham Lincoln—who each received more than 60% support for being minted or printed on currency—there are plenty of other historical figures that Americans are interested in seeing featured. However, the poll also shows that between a third and a fifth of respondents had no strong opinions on the matter.
The most and least favored candidates
Not a historical figure but a symbol of the nation’s history, Lady Liberty is a popular candidate, with 54% of respondents strongly or somewhat supporting her inclusion on the currency.
Other figures receiving approval ratings above 50% include:
- Benjamin Franklin (52%)
- John F. Kennedy (54%)
- Rosa Parks (53%).
Additionally, 49% of respondents expressed “strong or somewhat support” for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.‘s inclusion in the currency lineup. Interestingly, Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt also received the same approval rating.
At the other end of the spectrum, only three of the 40 figures included in the poll received less than 15% support: Walt Disney, Marilyn Monroe, and Johnny Appleseed.
