Update:

As we start to put the winter months behind us, thoughts inevitable turn to sunnier climes, longer evenings and foreign flung destinations over the Easter and the hot summer nights.

Although, it’s always advisable to have ones passport up to date, there are a few destinations where US citizens can travel to without a valid passport.

To enter, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Mariana Islands or the US Virgin Islands, only valid ID is required by border control.

Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda all permit travel by land or sea for US citizens with a passport card instead of a full passport book. Canada will accept other proof of US Citizenship (such as a birth certificate) and a photo ID instead. Travellers under 16 only need proof of citizenship but you not travel to Canada or Mexico by air without a US passport book.
