Not a good idea to go for a swim in Rome’s Trevi Fountain: This drunk tourist is now banned for life

The Trevi Fountain in Rome is one of the most beloved and frequently visited tourist attractions in the world. Known for its stunning baroque architecture and the tradition of throwing coins for good luck, the fountain draws millions of visitors each year.

The landmark is open from 9 am to 9 pm, and visitors are charged to enter. These measures were only imposed last year, as tourism in Rome continued to grow and the city needed better ways to manage the massive flows of people to these highly trafficked sites.

The consequences of an overzealous midnight swim

Recently, CNN reported an incident involving three tourists who had indulged a bit too much in wine during their travels. Feeling adventurous after a night out, they decided to visit the Trevi Fountain after hours. Things escalated when one of the friends, traveling to Rome from New Zealand, turned around and jumped straight into the fountain.

The decision to take a dip in the famous fountain had serious repercussions. The tourist was immediately fined €500, approximately $524, for his actions. Additionally, he was issued a lifetime ban from the Trevi Fountain itself. This means he will no longer be allowed to visit this particular monument again.

The ban is very limited in scope, with the penalty only applying to the Trevi Fountain. The tourist remains free to explore the rest of Rome and visit other historic Italian landmarks.
